Your Rights with Your Credit Report

You have the right to fix wrong info in your credit report by talking to the credit bureau yourself. But, no one, not even a ‘credit repair’ service, can remove correct and up-to-date info from your report. If negative info is correct but older than 7 years (10 years for bankruptcy stuff), the credit bureau should remove it.

You can get your credit report from a credit bureau, maybe for a small fee. But, if you were denied credit, a job, insurance, or a place to live because of your credit report recently, you can get the report for free. The credit bureau will help you understand your report. You also get a free report if you're job hunting and unemployed, on public assistance, or think there's wrong info on your report because of fraud.

If a credit repair company breaks the rules, you can take them to court. The law says they can't trick you.

You can back out of a deal with a credit repair company within 3 days of signing up, no problem.

Credit bureaus should make sure the info they have is right, but sometimes they make mistakes. You can tell a credit bureau if you think something in your report is wrong. They have to check it out and fix any mistakes for free. You should give them all the info you have about the mistake.

If you're still not happy after the credit bureau checks again, you can explain your side of the story in a statement. The credit bureau will include your statement in your report whenever someone asks for it.

The Federal Trade Commission watches over credit bureaus and credit repair companies. For more info, contact:
